Climbing Safety
Yes, you must have heard it before ...
Climbing is a dangerous sport. One moment of inattention
could cost you your own or someone else's life.
Here are some pointers that might save a life:
- Check and double check your tie-in knot (leave a minimum 6"
tail and tie off the loose end).
- Check and double-check that your harness is buckled properly with
the webbing doubled back and there is at least a 3" tail.
- Check that the rope passes through both the leg loops and
the waist belt of your harness.
- Check points 1, 2 and 3 on your partner.
- Once tied into the rope, NEVER untie until you are absolutely
safe.
- Be careful not to dislodge loose rock. Don't assume a flake
is solid just because it's on an established climb.
and be especially careful at the top of routes.
- Don't stand around the base of the cliff if you aren't belaying.
Limit your chances of being hit on the head.
and don't relax your vigilance at the top of the climb.
- Don't drink and climb (or drink and belay).
- Be responsible for your own safety and look out for everyone
else's safety too.
