Welcome to the Los Alpinistas home page!
Who are Los Alpinistas?
Los Alpinistas
are a group of climbers
based in San Diego. The origins of this group lie in both the San Diego section
of the Sierra Club,
going as far back as the venerable Rock Climbing Section (RCS), and a climbing
group from the General Atomics fusion group,
the Sloths, headed by Big Daddy Sloth, John Lohr. The member
directory contains e-mail addresses in addition to photographs and descriptions
of some of our members.
How does Los Alpinistas differ from other climbing organisations?
It's not so much about
organisation, but rather lack thereof. We
have no formal meetings,
rules or membership fees. We are primarily a bunch of cool dudes (and dudettes)
looking to have fun climbing in the outdoors. Join us on Wednesday
evenings and see for yourself.
Our members span all
age groups. Here's John Lohr, who just climbed Mt. Vinson, in Antarctica. Congratulations
John! Next stop Mt. Everest?
Where and when do you climb?
During the summer we climb
every Wednesday evening at one of several locations around San Diego; Mt. Woodson,
Mission Gorge and the Santee boulders. Contact John
Lohr if you would like to join us. We also climb year-round, on weekends
and holidays, in a variety of locations including Joshua
Tree, Red Rock Canyon, Owens River Gorge, Cañon Tajo, Tahquitz, Suicide
and Yosemite. Stories of previous trips
are available in the Los Alpinistas archives.
How do I find out about upcoming trips?
Through the climbing calendar. The climbing calendar is available through these pages,
is sent out to members by e-mail or is passed on by word of mouth.
What is the etiquette for going on trips?
This is best illustrated
by reading the dialogue with Hans Floreen, "On the
Road with Los Alpinistas " and Sloth's account of Wednesday
evening climbing.
